Clearwater High School "Kindle" Project

Here’s one way to lighten a student’s backpack: Say goodbye to textbooks.

Clearwater High School next year will replace traditional textbooks with e-readers. The gadgets will be fully loaded with all the textbooks students need, minus all the paper.

For rising junior Bennie Niles, 17, it could mean accessing English, math and physics texts via a hand-held device more on par with the technology he and his peers use every day.

“It gives you the ability to be more fluent,” Niles said as he held a Kindle reader. “It helps you have a better understanding and comprehension of the text.”

Principal Keith Mastorides said he was inspired to make the switch earlier this school year after campus sur veys revealed a desire to integrate more technolog y with classroom instruction.

“When you think about students today, three-quarters of their day is spent on some kind of electronic device,” said Mastorides. “We’re just looking at textbooks a little differently.”

Though the school hasn’t settled on a vendor, school officials are negotiating with Amazon Kindle to tr y to equip all 2,100 students with the 10ounce devices this fall.

Kathy Biddle, a self-described “dinosaur” who has been teaching more than 31 years, said she’s excited about how it might enhance her world histor y and sociolog y classes.

“I think it’s the way kids are thinking today,” Biddle said.

John Just, assistant superintendent for the district’s management information systems, said that when the district contacted Kindle at M astorides’ request, they were told no other high school had embarked on such an effort.

Kindles are listed on Amazon.com for $259 a piece, not counting the cost of purchasing the electronic texts. That’s typically far less than hard copy.

At first blush, the expense appears a savings over traditional textbooks. One book can cost $70 to $90. A typical high school student would have about seven.

But Just said it’s too soon to estimate cost savings .

He said the school hopes to strike a deal to pay less per Kindle while bundling in the price of the texts, technical support, teacher training and insurance.

Hard copy textbooks would still be on hand in every class for anyone who isn’ t ready to go digital.

Pratt Brown & Associates would like to give a big thank you to the Home Shopping Network for hosting the Pinellas Education Foundation's DDM program (Decentralized Decision Making) meeting on May 10Th,2010. The Home Shopping Network so graciously lent their space for this wonderful program as well as provided a magnificent dinner and refreshments. The DDM program is trying to allow schools to create their own staffing models and make their own financial and operational decisions based on the best interests of their unique school community. Under the DDM program,principals would have the creativity and flexibility to make decisions based on their school's student data with the goal of increasing student performance. This program has been implemented in other school districts and worked successfully through this management method.

The first day representatives from PB&A attended multiple break out sessions learning everything from marketing strategies and processes of doing business with multiple government agencies and larger corporations. TBTLA meetings begin with a networking reception at 7:30 a.m. on the ninth floor of the Vaughn Center at the University of Tampa and the meeting will begin at 8:00 a.m. The Vaughn Center is located at the corner of North B Street and Poe Parkway – building #23 in the map extract below, (it is directly in front of the John H. Sykes College of Business). Elevators are on the first floor in the center of the building. Entry from either street leads to the elevators. Attendees should park in the Thomas Parking Garage. A map of the campus is below and a parking pass will be sent via your confirmation.

Annual individual membership dues are $75. Company memberships are available for $150 annually. This entitles you to attend our quarterly meeting (breakfast included) and to participate as a voting member of the organization. Pratt Brown and Associates had the privilege of attending the Pinellas Education Foundation's Annual Breakfast on Wednesday March 24Th. Representatives from PB&A learned about the Frances Louise Stavros Scholarship. This scholarship was started by Dr. Gus A. Stavros in honor of his wife. Scholarships aren't the only thing the Stavros family gives back to the community, they also have a facility called "The Stravos Institute". Dr Stavros has donated over a million dollars to this fine learning institution. This facility gives fifth,eighth,and high school students the opportunity to be in the workforce for a day. There are multiple businesses, restaurants and even a radio station that the students work in. As we move into the new year and you are busy planning for 2010, one area of Risk Management that Companies should not overlook is an IT Security Risk Assessment by a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

An IT Security Risk Assessment should be performed on-site in conjunction with the CEO, CTO/CIO, and key IT employees. The initial assessment should include a review of both physical and internal infrastructures and will usually last up to 4 hours for most small to medium size businesses. The event is an educational and mentoring session of GETSMART (Getting Everyone To Study Math and Related Technologies). GETSMART brings together academic and industry mentors to promote careers in math, science, and technologies among girls.

New IT Jobs in Tampa

From the Chicago Sun Times...

..., Chicago-based Allscripts, which supplies software and services to doctors' offices, expects to add jobs with an initiative to bring electronic prescribing to doctors' offices. Allscripts has started such an initiative in Tampa, Fla., where it is partnering with the University of South Florida to introduce an electronic-prescribing system to 10,000 doctors in that area. The Tampa project will create 100 jobs for "healthcare ambassadors" who train physicians in setting up electronic systems.

Allscripts wants to help doctors take advantage of various incentives in the Obama administration's economic stimulus plan, which sets aside more than $20 billion to convert doctors' paper records to electronic ones. Fewer than 20 percent of doctors nationwide use electronic records. . .

Sun Microsystems Lays of 9 in Tampa

According to the Tampa Bay Business Journal Sun Microsystems is laying off 1,500 workers company wide.

Tampa is fortunate in only losing 9 positions.

We would welcome these Sun Professionals to call us about programming jobs in Tampa Bay, or Networking Jobs in Tampa Bay.

While all job layoffs from this economy are bad news, the good news is that the Tampa Bay area only lost 9 out of the 1,500 jobs, which speaks well to this area's ability to ride out the storm.
